The name
What is Fishball?
Fishballs (魚蛋) are Hong Kong street food: bouncy, cheap, and sold by the skewer in curry sauce from stalls all over the city. They were my favourite food as a kid. I was also a chubby kid with a head as round as one, so Fishball became my nickname.
Cantonese gives the word a second life. A fishball song (魚蛋歌) is pop knocked out to a formula: nothing new in the music, yet another love lyric on repeat, and a hook the whole city is humming within a week. Nobody calls it art. It sells.
That’s the plan. These apps don’t need to be original, or the first of their kind. They need to be good enough that people use them, and each to earn a little. Enough fishball songs make a living. The ones so far are on fishball.app.
